The Budget: Strong Liberal influence evident

Throughout the Budget there are key policies that we campaigned for, for example now 880,000 low paid workers will be freed from Income Tax altogether - the first step towards delivering our manifesto commitment to ensure no-one pays tax on the first £10,000 they earn.

Nick Clegg says:
“These measures will ensure that the burden of deficit reduction is shared fairly across society"

"We have had to take difficult decisions to tackle the deficit and lay the foundations of a fairer society. These are not decisions any government wants to take but we have no choice except to clear up the financial mess that Labour left us. Today’s Budget takes these difficult decisions in an honest and fair way and with the clear stamp of Liberal Democrat values running through it."

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Simon Hughes said that the budget
"clearly reflects many of the tax priorities which won the Liberal Democrats almost seven millions votes at the election.

"As a result of this budget millions of pensioners and those on low incomes will be helped and people with greater wealth will contribute most.

Of course today’s budget required compromise, but the country can clearly see the Liberal Democrats have a major influence on UK economic policy. From now on, Britain will be a fairer place."

Coalition Government

Freedom

Fairness

Responsibility

The three words that the coalition government aim to emulate.

Nick Clegg said: "I hope this is the start of a new kind of politics I have always believed in. Diverse, plural, where politicians with different points of view find a way to work together to provide good government for the sake of the whole country."

How do you think they've done so far?

Quotes on politics and the position of the Liberal Democrats within it

"[Liberal Democrats] carry the torch of progress now."

"That is why I now say to anyone who supported Labour in 1997 because they wanted fairness; they wanted to support, not demonise, young people; they wanted political reform, they wanted the environment protected; or because they simply believed in a better future - turn to the Liberal Democrats."

"The Lib Dems are now the dominant political party of urban Britain, running the majority of big cities outside London"

It is evident from this popular article (that featured recently in The Times) that slowly labour supporters are turning away from what used to be, Britains knight in shining armour to the more realistic life of which the Liberal Democrats are leading the country.

Star college and the Liberal Democrats

It's not always the adults who are affected by politics, not always the active members of parties or the passionate speaker behind the podium. Sometimes it's the most vulnerable who are the most affected by politics.
A decision has been made to review the withdrawal of £6.5 million worth of funding, which for a facility such as the National Star College is essential. The money promised to the college was for a much needed and exciting new developement.
The National Star College plays host to 350 students (145 of these being residents). All of which were incredibly excited for the new developments, which were to be made using the promised fund money.
The Liberal Democrats Shadow Minister for innovation, universities and skills has thrown it's weight behind the campaign in order to reverse a Government decision to withdraw funding, which was launched today at Westminster by the National Star College.
Whilst this issue is argued, the development goes unotuched. However the Liberal Democrats want you, the youth of today to step up, and help those who can't help themselves. http://www.natstar.ac.uk/Events_89.asp
Visit the link above, the National Star College hosts many events by which the money raised will further help to fund new developments.
